From what I’m reading online, everyone except me seems to find this film to be a comedy, but to me it was horror. It gave me a similar feeling to the one I got after watching Synecdoche New York, although they are very different.
It’s remarkable how this film casually shows how people are perceived based on each individual’s beliefs about themselves
In both, the creation of a play was a central plot point, and in both I felt like I was watching a psychological horror film. The protagonist Edward may be very different to me, but his insecurities about life, the way he hides from the past and acts out the present, only to find he can’t make it because of who he is, that’s what I feel.
Sebastian Stan is brilliant with his body language conveying all of his insecurities
Be it the person you expect to not be popular but is popular, or the person you expect to be nice but isn’t, perhaps even without knowing it. The film breaks the bubble of how such films usually show such situations by making them very disturbing, which I guess can also be perceived as darkly humorous.
One of the best films of the year and something I won’t be watching again anytime soon
That Adam Pearson is the charming, positive force of the film was a real surprise, but it’s great to see, especially when on the other side is Sebastian Stan.
